Poor Pluto

With Earth as the leader, the planets of the Solar System has turned against poor Pluto excluding him from their group of planets.

This image is build upon recent events in which Pluto has been degraded to a "dwarf planet". It is now no longer part of the classic lines of planets. It's strange when you've been able to memorize the planets ever since you were a kid, and for the future will have to leave this poor little icy rock out. :(

I liked doing a smaller project for a change. I had this simple idea, and worked on/off for little about a week on completing this image. I had great fun stuffing as many little funny details into the image as I could, and I hope you enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed making it!

the silent killer

This piece was done for a contest at the Danish 3D community 3dmaxer.dk with the theme The Silent Killer. I quickly decided that I wanted to do an alternative interpretation of the subject (which sadly meant no cool, dangerous and sneaky ninjas for my part).

"the silent killer" focuses on a very silent killer that we all can be very sure will get us someday: Time. It is one of the things in life we can be completely certain of - it will not last forever. The old man in the picture is on the edge of life, reflecting upon his past. Sadly though, not all pass away of natural courses, but most do, and I wanted to show that in this piece.

I worked pretty hard for about a month on this to get it done in time for the deadline. The image is composited, retouched and post-processed upon in Photoshop. Due to the deadline things like subtle hair strands on the old man's head and his sweater had to be painted in afterwards.

Thirsty?

Done for a compositing challenge (3D-battle #1) in the Danish 3D community at 3dmaxer.dk. We had a week to complete, and in the voting, this entry won. The contest was nothing serious with a prize and all, just for the fun.

We were given a photo to use as a plate to put anything we wanted into. My eyes caught the water hose, a cactus that looked human - and from there, the idea of a thirsty cactus desperate to get water developed.

I rendered out different passes from Blender, and composited them and retouched a bit in Photoshop. Before putting the 3D in, I had retouched the original photo, removing all flowers and giving the whole thing a more worn out appearence to better fit the little point the image had to convey.

altruism

I did this entry in a little challenge over 2 months at the Danish 3D community 3dmaxer.dk with the strange and mind boggling theme "Surreal Reality".

"altruism" has a surrealistic touch to it and a deep message flowing through it as well. It depicts an in my opinion very important part of life, reality, in a surrealistic and symbolic way. Ultimately, it's up to the spectator what he/she feels it is about.

Rendering times ended up being about 7-8 hours for all layers all together in the native resolution 2868x1200 pixels. There is somewhere about 40.000 characters in the image, the biggest part rendered on 2D alpha planes distributed by particle systems. The foremost 40 characters are full 3D and posed by hand.

The image is post-processed and composited in Photoshop. The background mountains are hand painted here as well, and the sky is an image retouched and hand painted upon to remove some of the 2D look and add more volumetric feel to the clouds.

I'm very grateful for all the crit and feedback I got on various sites I posted this. Thank you very much!

Starry Night

Based on the feeling of awe when one looks up into the big and beautiful night sky full of stars. The mystery and wonder of life's greatness. The piece is starring a little redhaired boy in pyjamas, looking fascinated up into the huge sky - at that moment realizing how small we all are compared to the world around us.

Wise Men

Many Christmas illustrations and images, tend to focus on Santa, his elves, Christmas trees, presents etc. All that stuff is okay, but it's ultimately just not what Christmas really is about. Instead of doing just another one of these types of images, i wanted to show something else. The three wise men (also called the three kings or the magi) following the bright star on Christmas eve.
